Nothing clever or specific about this list, here are the five new movies I’ve seen this year that either made my jaw drop or were just simply amazing.
Poor Things
This Emma Stone masterpiece has everything that a fantastical Victorian era world could have. Including a Frankenstein-esque mad scientist and a monster no one was expecting.
Saltburn
The only thing I can say right now about this fantastic film is, I want to live in the mind of Emerald Fennell.
The Creator
A look into what the world would look like if AI (artificial intelligence) and humans lived together in the opposite of harmony.
Bottoms
A hilarious film about popularity, sexuality, and teen awkwardness. Makes for a great double feature with Shiva Baby (written and directed by the same person, Emma Seligman, although Seligman co-wrote Bottoms with one of the stars, Rachel Sennott).
Barbie
I mean what else could be the film that represented 2023. A truly feminist film that shows what Barbie would be like if she thought about death, the meaning of life, and what it means to be a woman.
