. . . other than the fact that I love them both equally and they have very similar main cast relationships.
Main Thing 2 Different Shows Have in Common
Last year, an English ‘supernatural’ comedy premiered on Hulu (and has just released its second season on the streaming service): Extraordinary. And a few weeks ago, I discovered a show that originally aired on TBS before it was bought by HBO Max (currently Max): Search Party.
*I will get to what these shows are about in a minute.*
One English comedy series, the other an American comedy series. Most people would expect that these shows might not have a lot in common given their titles . . . and those people would be correct. But they have one main thing in common: that being that the core characters of each show are very close friends even if you feel like outside of the world of their shows these people would hate each other or just be brief acquaintances or something. So yeah. That’s it, I just felt I needed to promote these shows in some small way because they make me extremely happy and I think that are both grossly underappreciated. . . . Anyway here are brief summaries about the main plots of these awesome shows.
Extraordinary
Imagine a world where everyone in the world has one supernatural ability (flying, channeling dead spirits, turning into a cat, etc.) how amazing would that world be? How happy?
Turns out not that amazing or happy. That is the idea behind Extraordinary. The show centers around Jen, a young woman who is the only person on Earth without a superhuman ability. She is forced to live in a world where everyone around has an amazing gift and she doesn’t. But even if she did, what would she do with that gift? If she’s like her friends and family, not much. The main thing about this show is that those with superpowers aren’t in anyway superheroes. They live normal lives just with an extra special skill on their resumé. For example, Jen’s best friend Carrie is about to channel dead spirits which she uses at her job to confer with dead clients over their wills and what they may have meant when who got what inheritance, etc.
Search Party
Do you remember that kid that lived in your college dorm with you that you ran into in the dining hall? Yeah, I didn't think so. Well that person you can't remember has just disappeared.
That's the plot of season 1 of Search Party. Main character Dory finds out that Chantal a girl she and her group of friends went to college with - whose nice (that's pretty much all we know about the character based on the main characters description of her) - has disappeared (not kidnapped, just vanished after going out to run an errand). Dory is the only one who seems concerned that Chantal (again someone she barely knows only than a brief encounter in a college hallway) is in danger and may have vanished for a very important reason. Everyone around her including her boyfriend, ex-boyfriend, and two college best friends are kind of calling her out for her fake-y concern for a random college classmates.
Both of these shows have awkward moments, memorable friendships, and amazing dialogue that builds the characters and keeps you coming back for more after each episode.
